In the late 1970s, as boomboxes were rapidly becoming more stereo, various manufacturers were releasing masterpieces with a variety of distinctive features. While there was a trend to differentiate products based on functionality and performance, I think the ST-5 was the leader in terms of design. Its design is instantly recognizable as it is unlike any boombox made by the company, let alone any made by other companies. Let’s take a closer look at the design’s features.
No matter which manufacturer, the main colors for the body of a boombox were black or gray, but most used silver for the upper control panel, cassette holder, or speaker grill.
The ST-5 uses almost no silver or accent colors, and is all black for a tough look. It’s a manly color scheme.
